Believe to Succeed: Unlock the Power of Belief

Do you remember a moment in your life when pure belief moved mountains? Maybe it was a teacher who ignited your passion, a friend who saw potential you didn't, or even a group of children proving the impossible could be done.

Our beliefs have immense power. They shape our actions, our choices, and ultimately, our outcomes. And when it comes to our health, the power of belief can be the key to unlocking a life of vibrancy and well-being.

The Story of the Moved Monolith by Chris Johnson

"We all have areas in our life in which we excel—playing the piano, reading, math, science, skiing, golf, tennis, cooking, listening, swimming, speaking a foreign language, writing, the list goes on and on…

You slowly build confidence by having small successes.

I remember my sixth-grade teacher, Miss Ellis, telling me over and over, “You can be anything you want to be in this world!”  As I look back, she probably said this to all of her students.  But you know what?  It worked.  Miss Ellis used to tell me that I was a great speller, and to this day I believe I am a pretty good speller.  For some reason I don’t remember her telling me I was good in math…

Anyway, Miss Ellis, like so many other wonderful teachers in our world, got her students to believe in themselves.  You never know how one person can touch another person’s life.  Thank you, Miss Ellis, for touching my life!

Have you ever truly known something would work and it did?  You believed it was going to work.  No second-guessing or doubt.  Is it possible to place disbelief aside?  One of my long-time friends, and past personal training clients Bob Cornwell, who I call “Pocket Hercules”, was discussing the power of belief.

Bob is a professional pianist and teacher, but those lucky students who get to study with Bob know Bob is also a teacher of life!  Bob teaches and inspires his students to become better human beings; I believe this is Bob’s true gift.  When Bob and I used to train together we would share strategies between our professions.  I have learned so much from Bob over the years and I am truly grateful for his wisdom and friendship.

Bob told me about a trip he once took to the Field Museum in Chicago.  One of the highlights of the museum’s Egyptian display was an interactive setup to teach youngsters about the day-to-day life of the ancient Egyptians.  Bob’s seven year old daughter, Sasha, and her friends swarmed over the various installations while he and his wife rested their aching feet.

Pumps, tools, and other objects got the once-over, but a nearby monolithic cube of limestone (indicating the size of a typical block of stone from the Great Pyramid) was all but ignored.  As Sasha passed it, she gave the enormous rope with which it was bound a half-hearted tug.  Unable to resist, Bob let out a gasp, “I don’t believe it!”

“Don’t believe what?”  Sasha asked.

“It Moved!”

Galvanized, Sasha clapped onto the rope and pulled with all her might.  As if by magic, her friends and several nearby children, infected by her conviction, took hold and heaved.  A chain reaction set in and soon the cube swarmed with little bodies heaving in unison with all their hearts.  The chuckles of amused onlookers suddenly changed to gasps as briefly, but unmistakably, the monolith moved.

Later, as he reflected on the incident, what really struck Bob the most was not the surprise of the adults, but the utter certainty of the children.  They truly believed.  Make small changes, grow your confidence, build on your successes, and believe in yourself and others.  We all need more people like Miss Ellis in this world!
