Have you ever heard of the Blue Zones? These are areas in the world where people live the longest. Blue Zones have the highest concentrations of centenarians (people who live to or beyond the age of 100 years). And the best part is that these people live without disease. So what’s the secret that these centenarians all have in common? Simply, a lifestyle that incorporates REST, EAT, MOVE.
People in the Blue Zones don’t pump iron. Instead, they move on daily basis. They sit on the floor multiple times a day and are constantly moving up and down, squatting, gardening, etc. They ride their bike or walk to the grocery store.
There is no convenience route—they do their own yard work, fix things by hand, and make in person visits to their friends and family’s houses rather than chatting via phone or social media.
When they do physical activity, it is something they enjoy. They also value downtime. (We call that white space) People in the Blue Zones have a love for their community and value their social time with loved ones. Rather than eating for flavor and convenience, they eat for the experience. They appreciate the story of food as it relates to where it comes from, what’s involved in process, and how it connects them with the people they love. They don’t over indulge in anything, instead they do everything in moderation making each experience so much more rewarding. If they drink, they drink one glass of wine–not six.
Research suggests that human capacity (lifespan) is about 90 years old. Unfortunately, life expectancy in the United States is about 78 years old which is usually caused by disease, cancer, and diabetes. So Imagine all that you could do in 95 years or more?
The longest-living person whose dates of birth and death were verified to the modern norms of Guinness World Records and the Gerontology Research Group was Jeanne Calment, a French woman who lived to 122. (Source from Wikipedia)
